  • Democracy

    Definition:

The shared responsibility of and opportunity for all citizens to make wise choices for the good of our community. Each person has an equal, valued voice in decision-making.

Democracy involves having a voice - a valued opinion that leads toward the corporate good. As we prepare our children for life in 21st Century Britain, we look and plan for opportunities to teach, explain and participate in the democratic process.

Our House System drives our values and each year the pupils elect House Captains from Year 6 to represent them in various ways. These House Captains meet regularly with senior staff to help make improvements to our school from the children's perspective. They, in turn, are often gathering information from the pupils to share and act upon.

Class and group discussions place an emphasis in allowing each child an equally valued contribution.

The Humanities subjects are used to provide a contextual understanding of the democratic process e.g. how European countries are formed in political aspects of Geography; historical changes in the leadership of our country during varied eras in History.

Whenever our school site is involved with local and national elections (e.g. our Community Room is used as a Polling Station) we take the opportunity to involve the children as much as possible.
